TOYOTA POWERS YOUNGEST EVER CART RACE WINNER

Toyota-powered rookie Scott Dixon has become the youngest driver ever to win a CART race after charging from near the back of the field in the third round of the FedEx Championship Series at Nazareth in the United States.
Twenty-year-old Dixon beat the previous record for the youngest victory set by the late Greg Moore, who at the age of 22 won his first race in 1997.

Dixon overcame a poor qualifying position (23rd) thanks to a superior pit-stop strategy by his PacWest team and the excellent fuel economy of his Toyota-Reynard.

"There was a lot of radio contact with the team to see if I could go the distance on the fuel quite happily," said Dixon.

"I saved fuel early in the run and was able to run full rich at the end. I think Kenny (Brack) and Paul (Tracy) had to conserve a little and I was able to build a cushion," he said.

Dixon beat Brack home by less than a second while Tracy was another 1.3 seconds back in third place.

His victory ended a prolonged slump suffered by the PacWest team, which switched to Toyota engines for the first time this year.

It was also the fifth victory by a Toyota-powered car in the last six CART races on oval circuits.

Toyota's superiority on ovals was confirmed when another CART rookie, Brazilian Bruno Junqueira, set the fastest qualifying lap around the Nazareth Oval in his Ganassi Racing Toyota-Lola.

In further impressive performances by Toyotas, Jimmy Vasser (Patrick Racing Toyota- Reynard) and Christian Fittipaldi ( Newman-Haas Toyota-Lola ) finished in fifth and sixth positions, ahead of Junqueira who finished seventh.

Newman Haas Toyota driver Cristiano da Matta, who won the first round of the CART series and finished second in the second round, finished tenth at Nazareth, but still leads the championship with 40 points, equal with Paul Tracy.

Toyota's Vasser is equal second with Gil de Ferran on 30 points.

The CART teams now head for the Twin Ring Motegi circuit in Japan for the fourth round of the series on May 19.
