TOYOTA MATCHES BEST CART PROGRAM RESULT

Cristiano de Matta has handed Toyota a record equalling season following his victory at the Honda Indy 300 on the Gold Coast.
The win by the Texaco/Havoline/K Mart Toyota driver was Toyota’s fifth for the season and tenth overall since entering the program three years ago.

Toyota powered cars dominated the second last round of the Championship with four of its drivers leading the final 44 laps of the 65-lap event.

Roberto Moreno led for 25 of these laps, Cristiano da Matta for 15, Scott Dixon three and Jimmy Vasser one.

Toyota drivers also managed to win pole position, win the race, lead the most laps and register the fastest race lap.

The Honda Indy victory was Cristiano da Matta's second CART win of the season and the third of his career - all coming with Toyota power.

The victory also marks da Matta's fourth podium finish this season and his second in the last four races.

With the win, he now climbs into fifth-place in the overall CART standings.

"Cristiano da Matta ran a tremendous race and it's great to see a Toyota back in the winner's circle,” Toyota vice-president of Motorsports Jim Aust said.

“It's unfortunate that Roberto (Moreno) developed mechanical problems or we most likely could have seen a Toyota one-two. “With the victory, we matched our previous best of five wins in a season,” Mr Aust said.

“Now we'll put all of our focus on trying to surpass that mark at the season finale at Fontana in the Marlboro 500 presented by Toyota."
