Toyota Camry driver David Ratcliff is hoping history will repeat itself in the gruelling Bathurst three hour production car race on November 13. Camry is the reigning family car class champion in the Showroom Showdown for GT Production Cars held annually at Mount Panorama. Ratcliff completed the perfect preparation for his assault on the class C Bathurst crown with victory in both Indy support races on the streets of Surfers Paradise. The Camry's superior handling enabled it to carry more speed through the Indy street circuit's tight chicanes which lead onto the long straights. Ratcliff led home a full field of Commodores, Magnas and Falcons in the GTP category's family car class. In the second race Ratcliff saw off a challenge by Iron Man Guy Andrews. However, attention now turns to the Mount Panorama enduro where the Camry took victory at its first attempt last year. "The Bathurst three hour is always a survival of the fittest affair," Ratcliff said. "Last year the Camry's superior fuel efficiency and use of its tyres enabled it to run down the early class leaders. "And the V6 engine is a pretty handy weapon on Conrod and Mountain Straights. "Last year many of the larger cars ran into brake problems late in the event." Camry has posted class wins on just about every circuit where it has competed since entering the GTP category in 1998. Ratcliff was 1998 GTP champion in class over the series' eight rounds. Toyota MR2 also has an enviable record in production car enduros at Mt Panorama with class victory six times in seven attempts. Osborne Motorsports driver Ric Shaw is the 1999 class S title holder. The 1999 Showroom Showdown will be televised live on Network Ten on Saturday 13 November, the day before the famous FAI 1000. |
