Toyota has delivered its 700,000th Corolla in Australia. The major milestone was achieved just one month after the launch of the new fully imported Corolla range. The landmark 700,000th vehicle was delivered 32 years after the first Corolla was introduced in July 1967. Corollas have accounted for almost one in four of the 3,000,000 Toyotas sold in Australia. More Toyota Corollas have been sold than any Japanese car ever made. More than 23.5 million Corollas have been delivered worldwide since production began in 1966. Another 14.3 million vehicles have been built on the same platform. The latest fully imported model is the eighth generation Corolla. The new Corolla has brought improvements to safety, interior space, ride handling, comfort, and features. New Corolla is available in 14 models with the choice of two body styles and five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. All models have a 1.8 litre EFI-equipped Twin Cam Multi-valve engine, driver's SRS airbag, tilt-adjustable power steering, 14-inch wheels, engine immobiliser and remote central locking. Air conditioning is standard across the whole range. There are three sedan model grades - Corolla Ascent, Conquest and Ultima. Seca is offered in Corolla Ascent, Conquest, sporty Levin and Ultima grades. The first Corolla built in Australia was a 1.1 litre overhead valve coupe. It was made at the company's Port Melbourne plant in 1968, just two years after world manufacture began in Japan. Corolla has a long and successful motorsport record in Australia including eight class victories in the Bathurst 1000 and its forerunners. Toyota Corolla's earliest successes in this event in 1968 and 1969 effectively put the model on the motorsport map. Corolla took victory for Toyota in the World Rally Championship for manufacturers in 1999, its final year of works competition.
