Toyota has clinched the sports car class of the 1999 Australian GT Production championship. Toyota MR2 driver Ric Shaw has won his second consecutive GTP class title with a dominant display in class S at the series' final round at Sydney's Oran Park. Shaw went into the Oran Park finale with an unassailable lead in the class. He finished the championship over 60 points ahead of his main rival and BMW driver Wayne Russell. "The MR2 is a well sorted race car and has been very reliable throughout the series," Shaw said. "Now that we have won the title we have set our sights on victory in the Bathurst enduro." The Osborne Motorsports driver posted class wins at each of the eight rounds. The championship win caps a remarkable 12 months for Shaw, who was named NSW Competitor of the Year by the Confederation of Australian Motorsport at the end of last season. Meanwhile, Camry driver and reigning class C champion David Ratcliff clinched third position in that class after recording victories over V8 Falcons and Commodores at Eastern Creek and Queensland Raceway. The GTP cars will also compete in stand-alone events at Surfers Paradise (October 16 and 17) and in the category's blue ribbon three hour race at Mt Panorama, Bathurst (November 13). David Ratcliff's Camry is the reigning class C champion in the Bathurst event. Toyota MR2 has won its class in the Bathurst production car enduros six times this decade. Showroom production cars with limited modifications for safety purposes contest the GTP category. |
