Three cars that explore new frontiers for hybrid cars of the future will be unveiled by Toyota Australia at this year's Australian International Motor Show in Sydney.

The cars, which reveal Toyota's plans for Prius and its other Hybrid Synergy Drive vehicles, represent vital steps in Toyota's quest to develop the ultimate environmentally friendly car.

Hybrid X, an evolution of today's Prius, proposes creative solutions that will potentially become signature points of a specific hybrid identity.

It is a technology showcase for future hybrid cars and fits clearly into Toyota's environmental strategy of offering sustainable mobility for modern families.

Hybrid Supra HV-R is the first hybrid car to win a motor race, but its significance goes much deeper.

Toyota engineers gained valuable data from the race, which they are using to make future hybrid systems lighter, more powerful and more efficient.

Hybrid Camry is a left-hand-drive show car, flown specially to Australia for evaluation and motorshow display.

In just over a year, Toyota will become the first Australian carmaker to build a hybrid vehicle locally when the hybrid Camry goes on sale.

At this year's show, Toyota will also emphasise its global leadership in hybrid technology with displays including an interactive pod and the Toyota Scan-Vision, providing an under-the-skin view of hybrid that resembles an X-ray.

So far, Toyota has sold 1.6 million hybrid vehicles globally.

It estimates these vehicles have cut carbon-dioxide emissions by more than seven million tonnes and saved at least 2.7 million kilolitres of fuel compared with similar vehicles using petrol-only engines.

The company plans to sell one million hybrid vehicles a year globally as soon as possible after 2010.

By the 2020s, it aims to employ its Hybrid Synergy Drive technology across all vehicle series.

Toyota's stand at the Australian International Motor Show also features the debut of upgrades to its top-selling HiLux, RAV4 and Yaris.

HiLux, the country's best-selling ute and third most popular vehicle overall, gains fresh styling and improved front suspension across the range, as well as larger front brakes and improved rear suspension for all 4x2 models.

The HiLux line-up has been expanded to offer, for the first time, automatic transmission on entry-level WorkMate single and double cabs.

RAV4 - compact SUV market leader in each of the past two years - gains a package of active and passive safety features, including active front-seat head restraints as well as technology and comfort features.

All four-cylinder and V6 models now have vehicle stability control, traction control and hill-start assist control as standard equipment.

For Yaris, Toyota has also increased active safety, comfort and convenience as well as new exterior and interior styling.

Manual-transmission versions of Yaris 1.3-litre and 1.5-litre models now attract a maximum five-star rating from the Federal Government's Green Vehicle Guide.

It joins Prius, which is the Guide's top-ranked vehicle. Toyota is the only manufacturer to achieve five stars with cars using regular unleaded fuel.

Toyota today unveiled a concept car that points to a possible future direction for the company's hybrid benchmark, Prius.

Hybrid X, with its futuristic body shape and advanced technological features, is clearly an evolution of the current Prius.

Created and developed by Toyota's European styling centre ED² in the south of France, the four-door, four-seat concept car proposes a new design language for Toyota's hybrid models.

It is also a technology showcase for future hybrid cars, moving a step closer to Toyota's vision of the ultimate environmentally-friendly motoring.

Hybrid X will influence the entire Toyota brand and its hybrid models in the future.

It is one of three future-oriented hybrid models Toyota is displaying at this year's Australian International Motor Show.

Hybrid X is joined by the Hybrid Supra HV-R race car - the only hybrid car to win a motor race - and a US-specification version of the hybrid Camry to be built in Australia from 2010.

Toyota's stand also includes current Prius as well as technology displays including an interactive Hybrid Synergy Drive pod and the Toyota Scan-Vision, providing an under-the-skin view that resembles an X-ray of Prius.
The motor-show appearance of Hybrid X comes soon after Toyota announced it would build a hybrid Camry in Australia from 2010.

Hybrid X is the latest concept to demonstrate Toyota's world-leading Hybrid Synergy Drive technology, which is at the core of the company's strategy to develop the ultimate eco-car.

The show car fits clearly within Toyota's environmental strategy of offering sustainable mobility for modern families.

It has the dimensions of a conventional family car with an overall length of 4,500mm and wheelbase of 2,800mm. The width is 1,850mm and height 1,440mm.

It proposes unconventional creative solutions that will potentially become the signature points of a specific hybrid identity.

Hybrid X features a futuristic body shape that is dominated by two 'U' shapes created by the upper glass frame area and the unconventional A and C pillars.

Viewed from above, this gives the impression of a large X - hence the name of the concept, Hybrid X.

Dynamic hints of driving performance are provided by the customised 20-inch alloy wheels with ultra-low profile 225/40 R20 tyres.

LED headlamps are integrated into the dashboard and are now part of the interior of the car and can communicate information such as safety distances, acceleration and braking to other drivers and pedestrians.

The driver can set the ambience within the car, controlling sight, sound, touch and even smell.

A drive-by-wire steering pad features a central screen to relay information to the driver about the energy flow path, fuel consumption and gear position.

Space-saving seats are formed using injected foam techniques, which create comfort while reducing weight.

The two independent rear seats can swivel by 12 degrees to allow passengers to enjoy the scenery or conversation.

The first - and only - hybrid car to win an officially sanctioned motor race will make its world motor-show debut at this year's Australian International Motor Show in Sydney.

The Toyota hybrid Supra HV-R won last year's Tokachi 24-hour enduro in Japan, starting from pole position.

Toyota Australia's corporate manager product planning Peter Evans said the victory was a significant moment in the history of Toyota and motorsport.

"In the toughest of motorsport environments, the Hybrid Supra HV-R has demonstrated the flexibility and performance potential of Toyota's hybrid technology," Mr Evans said.

"More importantly, data gained by engineers during the race is being used to help make future hybrid systems lighter and more efficient.

"With the introduction of hybrids and energy recovery into motorsport, the direct benefit that motorsport has on the development of passenger-car technology has been reestablished.

"It also reaffirms that hybrid systems will have a prominent future, both on the track and on the road."

Mr Evans said the victory showed hybrids could achieve strong performance as well as excellent fuel economy.

"The low-down grunt afforded by the electric motors delivers impressive acceleration, exceeding the performance of cars with bigger petrol-only engines," he said.

Toyota was striving to improve the performance and fuel efficiency of all its vehicles, including hybrid systems.

"Central to those improvements are reductions in size, weight and cost - and the Hybrid Supra HV-R weighs just 1080kg in race trim," he said.

"When it comes to putting cars on a slimming program, motorsport is the automotive equivalent of Jenny Craig.

"It's all about gaining fractions of a second each lap while also improving the fuel efficiency in order to stretch the distance between fuel stops."

The Hybrid Supra HV-R is powered by a 350kW 4.5-litre petrol engine working in tandem with a 150kW electric motor mounted on the rear axle as well as small electric motors in the front wheels.

It has a sophisticated energy regeneration system to recover the huge amount of energy available under heavy braking from high speeds.

Instead of being fitted with rechargeable batteries usually found in hybrids, the Hybrid Supra HV-R uses a quick-charging capacitor system designed to cope with the high energy flow of the massive acceleration and braking during a long race.

Toyota Australia will begin producing Australia's first hybrid car in just over 12 months, the company said today.

Toyota Australia senior executive director David Buttner said production of hybrid Camry sedans will start in early 2010 at the company's Altona manufacturing plant in Melbourne.

Mr Buttner said the arrival of hybrid Camry will give Toyota Australia the unique advantage of producing and selling a hybrid family car.

He said hybrid vehicles produce lower and cleaner emissions than standard engine technologies, improve fuel consumption and lower the demand for oil.

"The hybrid Camry is a next-generation, fuel-efficient vehicle that is better for the environment and the hip pockets of Australian motorists," he said.

The 2008 Australian International Motor Show in Sydney provides the first close-up for local motorists of Toyota's hybrid Camry.

The display model is a left-hand-drive US-specification car brought specially to Australia for evaluation and public display of Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive technology.

Joining the hybrid Camry on the motor-show stand will be two other future-oriented hybrid cars:
• The Hybrid X concept, which provides a vision for the future of Toyota and its Hybrid Synergy Drive technology, and
• The Hybrid Supra HV-R race car - the only hybrid car to win a motor race.
The stand will also feature Prius, the world's best-selling hybrid, which has reached global sales of 1.1 million, including almost 11,000 in Australia.

Hybrid Camry will offer more performance while using less fuel than a conventional petrol Camry - and it will also emit less carbon dioxide.

Its petrol-electric Hybrid Synergy Drive technology combines a four-cylinder petrol engine and a high-voltage motor, which are controlled by computer to ensure they work together in the most energy-efficient way.

Hybrid Camry can operate for short distances on electric power only. Its petrol engine can propel the car and recharge the battery at the same time.

It also provides automatic stop/start for the engine at traffic lights, reclaims energy while braking and uses energy stored in the hybrid battery to boost acceleration performance.

Toyota Australia plans to produce 10,000 hybrid Camry sedans a year in addition to the existing four-cylinder Camry and V6 Aurion sedans produced at the Altona plant in Melbourne's west.

The hybrid Camry is currently produced in Japan and the United States. It will also be produced in Thailand.

Toyota's global vision is to sell one million or more hybrid vehicles annually as early as possible after 2010.

By the 2020s, the company aims to employ hybrid technology across all vehicle series.

Toyota is Australia's largest car manufacturer and market leader with annual sales approaching 250,000 vehicles.

This year, the Australian company celebrated the production milestone of 2.5 million vehicles after 45 years of local manufacturing operations.

Last year, Toyota Australia exported a record 98,000 vehicles to more than 20 countries, mainly to the Middle East.

Toyota has expanded its HiLux range, for the first time offering entry-level WorkMate with automatic transmission.

The new WorkMate Single Cab and Double Cab automatic models take the HiLux 4x2 range to 16 models.

The launch of WorkMate automatic is part of an overall visual and technical upgrade for the now 32-model range of Toyota HiLux 4x2 and 4x4 utilities.

The technical upgrade includes Euro IV compliance for HiLux' two VVT-i equipped petrol engines: WorkMate's exclusive 2.7-litre engine and the 4.0-litre V6.

It also includes larger front brakes and improved rear suspension for all 4x2 models, and improved front suspension across the entire range.

HiLux WorkMate's Euro IV-compliant 2.7-litre 2TR-FE petrol engine delivers 116kW of power and 240Nm of torque (ECE).

It can be matched to a five-speed overdrive manual or four-speed overdrive automatic transmission.

Toyota offers WorkMate with the option of ABS anti-skid brakes.

In addition, all WorkMate models now have 15-inch steel wheels. These 15-inch steel wheels were previously available on WorkMate only in conjunction with the optional ABS anti-skid brakes.

The adoption of 15-inch wheels on all 4x2 models has allowed Toyota to increase the front brake size, for increased active safety.

HiLux 4x2 now has 275mm-diameter front disc rotors, in lieu of the superseded 255mm-diameter rotors.

The suspension upgrade for HiLux 4x2 includes revised valving for the front and rear dampers, to enhance response to road surface inputs, and achieve a flat, stable ride.

In addition, Toyota has revised the 4x2 model's rear suspension bushes, to reduce vibration from road surface inputs.

HiLux 4x2 and 4x4 rear suspension now features double-row, roller-type axle bearings, for improved reliability and more stable handling

HiLux' exterior changes include a new trapezoid shape radiator grille, to complement the design theme of Toyota's SUVs.

The opening of the lower grille has been enlarged to create a feeling of width and a low centre of gravity.

HiLux' new exterior features also include a new front bumper design and a new headlamp design with clear lenses for the front turn signal lamps.

High-grade HiLux 4x4 SR5 models adopt a new 15-inch alloy wheel design.

All SR5-grade models now have audio and multi-information display controls on the four-spoke leather-bound steering wheel, as well as a new design chrome/grey radiator grille in lieu of the previous body-coloured grille.

HiLux Double Cab SR5 now has the added feature of cruise control.
A new metallic exterior colour has been adopted from the Kluger colour palate - Tidal Blue.

Inside, upgraded HiLux has a cover on the front passenger vanity mirror and a new shift console on all manual transmission models.

The console has been raised by approximately 30mm, to enhance the vehicle's appearance.

The light control switch and the wiper control switch have been changed to enhance operability.

Despite the added specification and fresh looks, there is no increase in the recommended retail prices for Workmate models. The new automatic transmission for Workmate is $2000.

Toyota has also maintained prices on 4x2 turbo-diesel models and 4x4 SR V6 petrol single-cab and cab-chassis models.

Although the cost of raw materials has risen sharply, price increases on other models have been kept to a minimum, averaging just one per cent.

Toyota has upgraded its RAV4 range with a package of active and passive safety features, as well as new technology and comfort features.

Active front-seat head restraints have been adopted as standard equipment across the nine-model RAV4 range - to reduce the chance of whiplash injury in a rear-end collision.

Driver's knee SRS airbag has been adopted as standard equipment on seven models, and is available as an option on entry level four-cylinder CV-grade.

The driver's knee SR airbag option on RAV4 CV is part of a combined option pack that also includes front-seat side SRS airbags, front and rear side curtain shield airbags, and front dual-zone climate controlled air conditioning.

The overall RAV4 upgrade means all RAV4 and RAV4 V6 models now have vehicle stability control (VSC), traction control (TRC) and Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) as standard equipment, and all automatic transmission models have Downhill Assist Control (DAC).

The vehicle stability control system includes a VSC-off switch.

RAV4's impressive list of safety and technology improvements also includes the adoption of an electro-chromatic interior rear-view mirror on high-grade ZR6 and four-cylinder Cruiser L.

In addition, RAV4 Cruiser, Cruiser L, SX6 and ZR6 now have auto on/off headlamps.

RAV4's comfort improvements include the addition of climate-controlled air conditioning on the entry level six-cylinder CX6 model.

RAV4 also has new alloy wheels, with a new five-spoke design replacing six-spoke wheels on four-cylinder RAV4 Cruiser and Cruiser L, and new six-spoke wheels replacing five-spoke on V6 SX6 and ZR6.

In addition to its safety, technology and comfort improvements, RAV4 has received a visual upgrade.

Exterior changes include new designs for the headlamps, front fog-lamps, radiator grille, front and rear bumpers and rear combination lamps.

The new front mask gives RAV4 a sharper appearance.

RAV4's exterior mirrors now have built-in turn signal indicators.

There are three new exterior colours -Graphite, Sandstone and Liquid Bronze.

Inside, RAV4 has new driver and front passenger air registers, and easier-to-read instrument meters.

Toyota offers nine RAV4 models - all with VVT-i equipped engines and Active All-Wheel Drive.

There are six 2.4-litre four-cylinder models with the choice of five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission, and CV, Cruiser and Cruiser L equipment grades.

There are three 3.5-litre V6 models - CV6, SR6 and ZR6 - all with five-speed automatic transmission.

Despite the added value of the new features for RAV4, the prices on most models have not changed.

Four-cylinder Cruiser models have been reduced by $500 while the only price increase is for the V6 SX6 model.

Toyota has increased the active safety, comfort and convenience of its Yaris hatch and sedan range as part of an overall model facelift.

At the same time, manual versions of the Yaris have been awarded the maximum five-star rating on the Federal Government's Green Vehicle Guide.

Fuel consumption for 1.3-litre Yaris manual models is 6.0 litres/100km with CO2 of just 141grams/km based on the official combined cycle. Figures for the 1.5-litre manuals are 6.1 litres/100km and 145 g/km.

Only petrol models attract five stars. Toyota, with Yaris and Prius, is the only manufacturer to achieve the maximum rating with cars using regular unleaded petrol.

The new Yaris hatch has improved headlamps with increased reflector area for a longer and increased spread of light.

Comfort improvements include the adoption of telescopic steering column adjustment on entry-level YR hatch.

New convenience features include illumination for the steering wheel-mounted audio switches on Yaris YRS and YRX hatch.

Toyota has also increased the number of assist grips in all Yaris models, and supplies two remote keys with each vehicle.

An automatic gear shift position indicator has been added to the dashboard of all automatic sedan models.

All new Yaris models have improved Jacquard-weave seat trim, with individual Dark Grey patterns for YR and YRS hatch, YRX hatch, and both YRS and YRX sedan.

The exterior body kits for both YRX hatch and sedan have been refreshed, and a new body-coloured radiator grille insert has been adopted with the hatchback body kit.

Exterior facelift changes for Yaris hatch also include its new headlamps, as well as new front and rear bumpers, new front grille and new tail lamps.

The new tail lamps have light emitting diode (LED) stop lamps - for increased visibility and reliability.

In addition, Yaris hatch has a new wheel cover design on YR and a new eight-spoke 15-inch alloy wheel design on YRX.

There are three new Yaris hatch exterior colours - Graphite, Lustre (Silky Gold Mica Metallic) and Sting (Yellow).

Inside, Yaris hatch now has a "warm silver" look on the centre cluster of all models, and chrome rings on the air conditioning registers of YRS and YRX grade.

Yaris sedan has a new block-pattern radiator grille, and newly adopted side turn indicators in the exterior mirrors.

YRS has a new wheel cap design and YRX has new eight-spoke alloy wheels.

There are two new Yaris sedan exterior colours - Santorini and Tidal Blue.

Toyota offers 16 Yaris models: 12 hatchback and four sedan models.

The range is made up of three-door and five-door hatchback models, and four-door sedan, all with the choice of manual or electronically controlled automatic transmission.

Two VVT-i engines are offered.

There three equipment grades in hatch (YR, YRS and YRX), and two sedan grades - YRS and YRX.

All Yaris grades have an optional Enhanced Safety Pack, with additional SRS airbags.

Entry prices for Yaris remain at $15,190 for the 3-door YR and $16,390 for the 5-door YR, both with manual transmission.

Prices on all YRS and YRX hatch models have been reduced between $50 and $250.

Sedan variants have had price increases of $200-$400.

Toyota has upgraded its TRD HiLux performance sports truck range and broadened the colour palate of supercharged TRD Aurion.

Improvements to the supercharged 225kW TRD HiLux include new headlamps, added interior features, and easier-to-use switches and controls.

High-grade TRD HiLux 4000SL has the added features of audio and multi-information display controls on the four-spoke leather accented steering wheel.

TRD Aurion has three new exterior colours, with Tungsten and Inferno added to the colour choices for TRD Aurion 3500S, while Diamond White and Tungsten have been added to the TRD Aurion 3500SL palate.

TRD Aurion 3500S is now offered with the choice of six exterior colours, and TRD Aurion 3500SL is now available in four exterior colours.

In addition to its new exterior colours, TRD has improved TRD Aurion's interior appearance.

Two interior colours are available in 3500S - red and Black (dark grey) - while TRD Aurion 350SL has a Black interior.

The new Black interior features dark grey leather door inserts with red stitching, as well as dark grey leather accented and Alcantara seat trim with grey embossed Alcantara bolsters and red stitching.

It has a red /dark grey leather accented gear shift knob, and a dark grey rear-seat centre armrest.

Red-stitched TRD floor mats are now standard equipment in TRD Aurion 3500S.
Floor mats were previously an accessory item for 3500S.

The floor maps for dark-grey interior 3500S models are dark grey, with red edges.

TRD HiLux's new exterior features include a new headlamp design with clear lenses for the front turn signal lamps.

The TRD-designed front bumper has been modified to accept a new front foglamp design.

TRD HiLux is offered in a choice of five exterior colours - Glacier White, Sterling Silver, Charcoal Grey, Ink and Velocity Red.

The 4000S model has a grey interior while 4000SL has dark grey/red leather accented seat trim.

Inside, TRD HiLux's light control switch and the wiper control switch have been changed to enhance operability.

Added detail touches include larger vanity mirrors, with covers, and ticket holders on both the driver and front passenger sun visors.

The Toyota Yaris is renowned for its economy, features and overall quality, but following a makeover from tuning specialist publication Auto Salon Magazine, it has been transformed into the ultimate one-off show car.

Dubbed "Project Yaris", the category-leading model was selected by Auto Salon Magazine because it provided the perfect platform for the publication's extreme plans.

The magazine selected some of Australia's leading tuners to fit the car with a double widebody body kit, urban camouflage paint scheme, race-inspired interior and titanium-finish wheels.

Project leader and Auto Salon Magazine's Deputy Editor, William Ng, said the Yaris' value for money was precisely the reason the car was chosen for an insane makeover.

"The Yaris already offered chic styling, a swathe of aftermarket support and a heap of potential in all its areas, so it was the perfect platform to build off," Mr Ng said.

"The vision of the car was simple: we wanted to show the masses that the diminutive Toyota was capable of excelling in any automotive environment. So, what better way to do this than to build a custom, one-off show car?"

Externally the car was fitted with a 'double widebody' bodykit with custom front and rear bars, front guards, side skirts, rear quarter panels and rear wing, as well as a Varis carbon fibre bonnet and Mu Secret HID headlights.

To add extra appeal, the Yaris was fitted with 17-inch RAYS Gram Lights wheels in titanium finish, and wrapped in Michelin Pilot Preceda tyres.

Completing the car was a custom interior that included a six-point roll cage, TRD Recaro RS-G bucket seats and other TRD trimmings including gear knob, tachometer, as well as oil and water temperature gauges.

Toyota motorsport manager, Todd Connolly, believes Project Yaris showcases the passion and enthusiasm that the tuning market has for TRD.

"Auto Salon Magazine is renowned for extreme makeovers and their out-there projects, and Project Yaris is no different," Mr Connolly said.

"It is intensely satisfying to know that a group of companies from Australia's tuning community not only picked a Yaris, but that they were able to work together to make this happen."
