DRIVER ENJOYMENT STANDARD IN NEW-LOOK RX RANGE

The new-look Lexus RX range offers driving enjoyment as standard.

Key to RX's newfound dynamics is a stiffer chassis, which has been achieved via an increase in spot welding throughout.

The extra stiffness has resulted in improved steering feel and response, and is teamed with revised suspension across the range for greater comfort.

Building on this stiffened platform is the new-look F Sport which features a unique suspension calibration, performance dampers - as debuted on CT 200h F Sport - and an updated wheel package.

Available on RX 350 and 450h, the new-look F Sport variants offer greater levels of vehicle driving dynamics and are complemented with an array of visual and comfort enhancements.

Furthermore, RX 350 F Sport models adopt paddle shift for the six-speed sequential transmission, aiding more spirited driving.

All RX models benefit from a new, more comfortable steering wheel, easier to use second generation Lexus Remote Touch controller, new navigation software and the latest in Bluetooth™* capabilities - paired with digital radio (DAB+) and live traffic alerts#.

RX LINE HAS LONG ROLL OF HONOUR

Lexus' luxury RX SUV has earned a host of awards and accolades in Australia and overseas since its introduction in 1998.

Highlights include four successive Best Luxury 4WD gongs in the Australia's Best Car's Awards (RX 330 in 2003, 2004 and 2005; and RX 350 in 2006).

It has also enjoyed significant award success in the US, winning favour from the motoring media, independent motoring bodies and the public through global survey companies.

In 1998 the first generation RX 300 was named the inaugural 'Sport/Utility of the Year' by authoritative US motoring journal Motor Trend just months after going on sale.

This marked the first time the magazine had separated its 'Truck of the Year' award into two categories, Truck and SUV, which reflected the growing popularity of the SUV segment and Lexus' ability to produce such a vehicle.

RX has also topped numerous US-based best value and choice awards, including 'Best Buy' from The Ultimate Car Book and Consumer Guide, and 'Best Overall Value' from Intellichoice, which takes into account seven cost areas over the first five years of ownership in naming its winner.

In addition, RX has achieved victory in many J.D. Power and Associates' Value Dependability Surveys, which measure problems experienced during the past 12 months by original owners of three-year-old vehicles.

In 2012 RX 350 won its segment and Lexus won the study overall, with 86 problems per 100 vehicles - 23 fewer than 2011.

The US-based Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has named RX a 'Top Safety Pick' on several occasions after it gained the highest possible scores in the institute's stringent independent crash testing.

RX 270 DEBUTS ALL-NEW ENGINE FOR RX LINE

The Lexus RX 270 four-cylinder petrol engine is new to Australia.

It has a die-cast aluminium block, dual VVT-i and twin contra-rotating balance shafts.

The 2672cc Lexus 1AR-FE engine delivers 138kW of power at 5800rpm and 252Nm of torque at 4200rpm.

It can operate on 91 Octane fuel and has an official combined fuel economy of 9.7 litres/100km*.

The new RX 270 has under-square bore and a compression ratio of 10.0:1.

Advanced features of the Lexus 1AR-FE engine include dual VVT-i, low-friction technologies (including an offset crankshaft), roller rockers for the valve train, a three-stage variable oil pump, low tension piston rings and auxiliary belt drive.

An Acoustic Control Induction System switches the length of the intake tract in two stages, based on rpm and throttle angle, thereby ensuring strong torque across a broad engine speed range.

Tumble control valves enhance combustion while the engine is cold, and help bring the catalytic converters up to working temperature more rapidly.

The combination of tumble control valves and new-generation 12-hole, high atomising long-nozzle fuel injectors reduce inlet port wall wetting - thereby maximising fuel economy and reducing hydrocarbon emissions.

The cylinder block is an open-deck, midi-skirt type with cast-in iron liners, as well as a die-cast aluminium lower crankcase and a stamped oil pan.

The forged steel crankshaft is fully balanced with eight counterweights and supported by five main bearings.

A helical gear pressed in No. 3 counterweight drives the twin contra-rotating balance shafts, which are housed in the lower crankcase.

*Fuel consumption will vary depending on driving conditions / style, vehicle conditions and options / accessories. Source of fuel consumption data: ADR 81/02.

LEXUS RX 350 RANGE FEATURES POWERFUL 3.5-LITRE V6

The new-look Lexus RX 350 has an all-alloy 3.5-litre quad cam dual VVT-i V6 engine which delivers 204kW of power on 95 octane fuel.

Lexus designed the 2GR-FE engine for a balance of power, driveability, fuel efficiency and low emissions.

It delivers 90 per cent of its 346Nm peak torque from 2300 to 6100rpm.

Maximum power is delivered at 6200rpm and maximum torque at 4700rpm.

Improvements in the new-look RX 350 include a new vertical-type engine-mount construction, which softens the impact of the mount's rubber stoppers and improves NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) suppression performance.

The engine has an electrically operated ACIS (Acoustic Controlled Induction System) to enhance intake runner length according to engine operating conditions, and therefore provide maximum torque.

To minimise weight the intake manifold is made of thin-wall cast aluminium and the surge tank is made from resin.

The ACIS actuator is laser-welded into the surge tank.

RX 350's exhaust manifolds mount directly to the catalysts to minimise warm-up time, thereby reducing emissions outputs.

Hexagonal ceramic catalysts are used to reduce emissions.

The exhaust manifolds are made of stainless steel to improve high-temperature endurance and minimise weight.

The 2GR-FE engine has 12-hole fuel injectors for ultra-fine fuel atomisation.

The injector tip protrudes slightly into the inlet port to minimise the distance from the injector to the valve, reducing wall wetting for improved fuel economy and reduced emissions.

RX 450h FEATURES POWERFUL YET EFFICIENT ATKINSON CYCLE 3.5-LITRE ENGINE

The new-look Lexus RX 450h has a unique 3.5-litre Atkinson cycle quad cam VVT-i V6 engine.

The 2GR-FXE engine delivers 183kW of power at 6000rpm and maximum torque of 317Nm at 4800rpm.

It has unique features when compared with the 3.5-litre RX 350 engine, including Atkinson cycle operation, cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), exhaust heat recovery and electric power for the air-conditioning compressor.

The electric power-assisted steering and air conditioning compressor mean the petrol engine can be stopped to save fuel whenever it is not required to power the vehicle.

The electronically controlled VVT-i system has a default setting to allow for easier and smoother petrol-engine restarting.

The RX 450h engine does not have a conventional alternator or starter motor.

A DC-DC converter supplies 14V power for the RX 450h ancillaries.

The number one motor-generator in the RX 450h hybrid transaxle acts as the petrol-engine starter motor when required.

The intake manifold for the 2GR-FXE engine has a hybrid-specific design, with a pressure sensor for use with the EGR system.

The engine has 12-hole fuel injectors for ultra-fine atomisation.

The injector tip protrudes slightly into the inlet port to minimise the distance from the injector to the valve.

This reduces wall wetting, for improved fuel economy and reduced emissions.

Atkinson cycle

Lexus adopted the Atkinson cycle for RX hybrid in 2009 (when RX 450h replaced RX 400h) to further increase fuel efficiency.

The Atkinson cycle - also known as the high-expansion cycle - makes full use of combustion energy by making the expansion stroke longer than the compression stroke.

It has a higher expansion ratio than a conventional Otto cycle engine, allowing more of the engine's energy to be harnessed into torque on the crankshaft - torque that would otherwise be lost in an Otto cycle engine.

Lexus has combined the Atkinson cycle process with quad-cam multi-valve cylinder heads and variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i), all of which optimise efficiency.

RX 450h HAS UNIQUE HYBRID DRIVELINE

The Lexus RX 450h driveline is unique, consisting of a hybrid-drive front-axle system with an electronic continuously variable transmission and an electric-drive rear axle.

Lexus designed the system for a combination of driveability, performance and efficiency.

The RX 450h front-axle driveline consists of a V6 petrol engine, transmission damper, compound set of planetary gears and two electric motors/generators.

It has low-resistance bearings to minimise friction.

The compound planetary gear set acts as an electronic continuously variable transmission, changing the transmission ratio for optimum performance, driveability and economy.

The transmission electronics include the Lexus AI Shift and the Lexus Sequential Shiftmatic System.

The sequential shift system allows the driver to select from six gear ranges by moving the shift lever from D to S and shifting between the '+' or '-' symbols.

The transmission damper has coil springs that absorb torque fluctuations from the petrol engine and the torque limiter has a dry-type single-plate friction material to absorb vibration - including NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) - from petrol-engine start.

The flywheel damper has two lining pads, one to help absorb torque fluctuations and the other to absorb shock.

Mechanical connection

The Lexus Hybrid Drive in RX 450h has as its mechanical heart a compound set of planetary gears.

The two sets of gears combine to perform three roles.

One set acts as a motor-speed reduction device for the electric drive motor, and the other as a power-split device, dividing petrol engine power between the generator and the front wheels.

Collectively, they act as an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (E-CVT).

The E-CVT smoothly adjusts the engine output speed and the front motor speed to provide drive to the front wheels.

The use of planetary gears to achieve two roles provides a significant saving in weight and space under the bonnet compared with either a traditional automatic transmission or a belt-and-pulley type CVT.

Engine power can be transmitted to the front axle via the mechanical path and the electrical path, or a mixture of both.

Some of the engine's power output is transmitted to the electric motor via the generator, as supplementary power for vehicle acceleration.

A second 50kW AC permanent magnet motor powers the rear wheels during take-off and acceleration.

As well as propelling the vehicle, the Lexus Hybrid Drive system allows for energy-saving regenerative braking on both the front and rear axles.

Lexus Hybrid Drive acts as an infinitely variable ratio transmission which can freely vary the petrol engine's revolutions.

The power management control ECU (HV CPU) comprehensively controls the Lexus Hybrid Drive.

This includes the electronic continuously variable transmission and HV battery.

RX 450h has a separate motor/generator (MG1) to capture petrol engine power that is not required to propel the vehicle.

The MG1 also acts as a starter motor for the petrol engine.

Compound planetary gear set

In RX 450h's compound planetary gear system, a parking gear (also called a compound gear) links the ring gears of the two planetary gear sets and the counter-drive gear (which in turn drives the front differential).

The engine output shaft drives the first planetary gear carrier and uses a set of pinion gears to transmit power to the outer ring gear.

The shaft of the outer ring gear connects via the compound gear directly to the countershaft and the front wheels.

The second planetary gear set - the motor-speed reduction set - has a fixed pinion carrier and its sun gear connects directly to the electric drive motor.

The sun gear connects to the front wheels via the compound gear.

The use of a motor-speed reduction gear allowed RX 450h's designers to minimise the size of the electric-drive motor while still providing high torque and power.

Lexus AI Shift

Lexus AI Shift can adjust the transmission control logic to suit different drivers and provide engine braking for hill descents.

The road-condition support control determines if the vehicle is climbing or descending based on inputs such as throttle opening and vehicle speed.

It maintains a lower drive ratio if the vehicle is ascending steeply to optimise hill-climbing ability.

It also maintains a lower drive ratio when the vehicle is descending steeply, to take advantage of engine braking.

RX 350 HAS ADVANCED ALL-WHEEL DRIVE

Lexus RX 350 was the first Lexus vehicle in Australia with on-demand all-wheel drive, for optimal driver control and improved fuel economy.

Lexus Active Torque Control all-wheel drive was designed to maximise traction and cornering stability while also saving fuel.

It is a compact, lightweight, high-performance all-wheel drive system that controls torque distribution between the front and rear axles by using an electromagnetic coupling in the rear differential housing.

The electronically controlled active all-wheel drive system operates in unison with RX 350's Vehicle Dynamic Integrated Management (VDIM) system.

The system saves engine power, and therefore fuel, by only driving the front wheels when the vehicle is cruising.

It switches automatically to all-wheel drive when needed - such as initial acceleration or a loss of front-wheel traction.

Rear-drive torque is disengaged when brake control systems such as ABS or VDIM are in operation, to prevent interference with these functions.

The driver can also manually override the system at speeds up to 40km/h by pushing the AWD LOCK button to achieve maximum all-wheel grip.

It can vary the torque split in the range from 50:50 to 100:0.

The electronically controlled coupling mechanism consists of two clutches: the control clutch and the main clutch.

A ball-cam mechanism is housed between the clutches, with an armature and electromagnetic solenoid to control the control clutch.

It determines the front-to-rear torque split, based on information from the vehicle's four-wheel drive Electronic Control Unit (ECU).

The Lexus all-wheel drive system's ECU networks with other key on-board ECUs, using the high-speed Control Area Network (CAN).

The proactive all-wheel drive system controls the percentage of torque delivered to the rear wheels by varying the electric amperage to the electro-magnetic solenoid in the electric control coupling. The solenoid in turn controls the control clutch and therefore the wet multi-plate clutch.

In addition to the LOCK function, the system has an AUTO mode for maximum take-off acceleration performance and smoother cornering.

When activated, AUTO mode optimally distributes drive torque to the front and rear wheels.

It also reduces torque flow to the rear wheels during tight cornering (to prevent the tight-corner braking phenomenon*) and when the vehicle is maintaining a cruising speed.

RX 350's VDIM can use the active all-wheel drive system to control the front-to-rear rear torque split if operating conditions so require.

For example, sudden acceleration of any vehicle during cornering can cause a driven wheel to start spinning, which in turn could cause the front or rear wheels to skid, resulting in a loss of control.

The active torque control AWD system controls torque distribution to ensure RX 350 follows the driver's intended line when cornering.

Feed-forward control predicts the driver's intended line to improve initial turn in.

If the VDIM detects approaching oversteer, then rear-wheel torque is reduced.

If approaching understeer is detected, then rear-wheel torque is increased.

Feedback control determines actual yaw rate, steering angle, G force and optimally distributes torque to the rear wheels.

* Tight-corner braking phenomenon can occur when an all-wheel drive vehicle is cornering at low speed. A difference in rotational speed between the front and rear wheels can cause the vehicle to lurch and decelerate.

E-FOUR AWD GIVES RX 450h ADDED TRACTION

The Lexus hybrid SUV RX 450h has an efficient all-wheel drive system.

Featuring three electric motor generators, RX 450h builds on the proven E-Four (Electric Four Wheel Drive) system that was first introduced in RX 400h.

The electric drive motors in the hybrid drive system play the crucial roles of providing motive force and charging the battery pack.

The front motor/generator (MG2) has 123kW of power and 335Nm of torque.

The rear electric motor (MGR) develops a maximum power output of 50kW and 139Nm of torque, all from zero rpm, while the front axle can be propelled by petrol or electric power, or a mixture of both.

Use of an electric motor-generator to provide power to the rear wheels gives RX 450h a varying torque distribution, depending on driving dynamics and road conditions.

The E-Four system provides a level of start-off stability and acceleration on snow-covered or other slippery road surfaces that is appropriate for all-wheel drive models.

E-Four also saves energy and petrol because the vehicle only uses all-wheel drive when it is needed - for example, a loss of front-wheel traction.

The RX 450h's system has also been refined to offer smooth delivery of power, thereby minimising torque steer and pull under acceleration.

RX 270 SHIFTS SMOOTHLY WITH SEQUENTIAL TRANSMISSION

The new Lexus RX 270 has a sequential-shift six-speed transmission with advanced electronics and internal ratios.

The RX 270 has Lexus' U760E transmission, which is matched to a 4.356:1 final drive ratio.

The six-speed super intelligent Electronically Controlled Transaxle has been developed with the aim of delivering excellent fuel efficiency, a flowing smooth gear shift feeling, good driveability and unsurpassed quietness when driving.

The RX 270's gear train has been optimised to make it light and compact.

A low speed lock-up damper has been adopted for the ultra-flat torque converter, resulting in excellent fuel efficiency.

RX 350 FEATURES INTELLIGENT TRANSMISSION

Lexus RX 350 has a six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with artificial intelligence and a sequential-style manual gear select shift.

RX 350 F Sport has the additional new feature of steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters.

The U660F transmission has an ultra-flat torque converter to minimise transmission length and weight.

The combination of RX 350's dual VVT-i V6 engine, electronic throttle, six-speed transmission and advanced Electronically Controlled Transaxle software is designed to optimise driveability, acceleration feel, shift quality and fuel economy.

The U660F electronic control software includes fuel-saving features such as flexible torque converter lock-up control from second to sixth gear, and deceleration lock-up in fifth and sixth gears.

The torque converter has optimally designed fluid passages and impeller configuration, resulting in substantially enhanced transmission efficiency to ensure good starting, acceleration and fuel economy.

The deceleration lock-up feature promotes an increased engine fuel-cut area, and therefore improves fuel economy.

It operates in concert with deceleration downshift control software to prevent the engine speed from exceeding the fuel-cut control operating range for as long as possible.

It ensures the transmission selects the appropriate gear - according to the speed with which the accelerator pedal is released - to prevent unnecessary up-shifts and match the driver's intention.

This allows the transmission to bypass the need for unnecessary downshifts when re-accelerating, and provides smoother acceleration.

Lexus Artificial Intelligence (AI) shift control is a transmission algorithm designed to manage the shift regime according to road conditions and driver intention.

It uses data on throttle opening angle, vehicle and engine speed, and brake signal.

The transmission Electronic Control Unit uses this information to provide three functions: basic shift control pattern, road condition support control and driver intention support control.

The AI shift can adjust the shift pattern to suit different drivers and provide engine braking for hill descents. It also reduces 'gear hunting' when going uphill.

The uphill/downhill shift control determines if the vehicle is climbing or descending based on inputs such as throttle opening and vehicle speed.

It prohibits unnecessary up-shifting if the vehicle is ascending steeply and automatically downshifts when the vehicle is descending steeply, to take advantage of engine braking.

Road condition support control (intelligent transmission software) gives RX 350 smooth-shifting performance in automatic mode, particularly on hilly roads.

Driver intention support control judges the driver's intention, based on accelerator usage and vehicle condition, to provide gear shift patterns that suit individual driving styles.

RX 350's sequential style shift has an S-mode gate shift lever.

A gear-position indicator is included in the combination meter.

Lexus' development targets for the U660F transmission were: improved dynamic performance, optimum fuel economy, light weight, optimum package efficiency, smoother gear shifting and increased responsiveness.

It has ratios of: first, 3.300; second, 1.900; third, 1.420; fourth, 1.000; fifth, 0.713; sixth, 0.608; and a reverse gearing of 4.148.

The six-speed transmission is matched to a 4.398:1 final drive ratio, including the counter-gear ratio.

RX 450h SPORT DRIVING MODE JOINS ECO AND EV

The new-look Lexus RX 450h has the added feature of SPORT mode.

It adds to the suite of technologies in RX 450h that assist drivers in selecting the best driving mode for individual circumstances.

RX 450h also has ECO and EV modes, and Sequential Shift.

For added convenience, RX 450h drivers can select Sport mode by using the multi-information switch on the steering wheel.

Sport mode increases the driving force during mid-range acceleration for enhanced performance and changes the electric power-assisted steering curve to increase driving enjoyment.

It also changes the instrument illumination from blue to red.

The RX 450h ECO mode actively modifies throttle action and climate control systems to support efficient driving and reduce overall fuel consumption.

ECO drive mode control balances driving, air conditioning and fuel economy performance, with the emphasis on fuel economy.

EV driving mode provides additional efficiencies in fuel consumption, allowing the vehicle to operate solely under electric power in certain conditions.

Operation in EV mode dramatically reduces noise when driving in quiet areas and negates exhaust emissions.

If conditions are satisfactory, EV mode can be enabled at approximately 40km/h - or below - and is highly beneficial in stop-start traffic, enclosed garages and many low speed applications.

In addition to the ECO and EV modes, the RX 450h Electronically Controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (E-CVT) features a sequential shift mode, enacted by moving the transmission shift selector to the 'S' position.

In this mode, the driver can select up to six speed steps in the E-CVT to provide more responsive performance or to add engine braking assistance.

RX 350 F SPORT HAS PADDLE SHIFT

The new-look Lexus RX 350 F Sport has the added feature of steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters.

The paddle shifters can operate in both manual and automatic transmission modes.

When the paddle shifters are operated while the transmission is in 'Drive', the transmission changes to 'temporary sequential mode' ('D' sequential mode) and manual-style shifting is enabled.

The temporary sequential mode is especially useful for initiating down changes (and hence increased engine braking on hill descents), corner entry and to smoothly slow the vehicle to match the speed of the vehicle ahead in heavy traffic.

The current gear can be seen in the Multi Information Display.

When in temporary sequential mode the transmission returns to normal operation when the vehicle stops, when "+" is selected in sixth gear, or the driver holds the up-shift paddle for more than one second while driving.

NEW RX FEATURES REVISED CHASSIS

The new-look RX range has a tauter chassis thanks to a rethink on the positioning and number of body and chassis welding points.

In total engineers added 12 additional spot welds to each side of RX (at the rear wheel housings and C-pillar) to refine Lexus' world-class chassis.

Engineers also added additional reinforcements around the dash panel and reviewed the power steering assist to improve steering response and feel - resulting in a lighter feel at rest and a smoother feeling when steering quickly.

RX retains its low centre of gravity and a large footprint on the road.

F Sport models feature performance dampers which absorb minor vibrations of the body, realising excellent handling stability and ride comfort.

LEXUS RX F SPORT TUNED TO ENGAGE

The new-look RX 350 and RX 450h F Sport models have the added feature of Lexus performance dampers front and rear.

The performance dampers are struts with a built-in shock absorber and are positioned at opposite ends of the chassis.

They are designed to absorb minor vibrations of the vehicle body for high levels of handling stability, driving quality and ride comfort, and lower NVH (noise, vibration and harshness).

The vehicle body is elastic and constantly vibrates and deforms while in motion.

Lexus technical partner Yamaha invented the performance damper to absorb these vibrations.

Lexus introduced performance dampers on the CT 200h F Sport and Sports Luxury models in March 2011.

The performance damper breaks away from convention by including a precisely machined shock absorber unit in place of the traditional reinforcing strut brace.

The gas-pressurised damper is machined with a high degree of accuracy to dampen vibrations in the body.

Such vibrations would otherwise cause flex in the body.

The effect of the performance dampers depends on the positioning, installation method and rigidity of the installation position.

The dampers are then tuned to achieve the dynamic feeling RX requires.

For example, they can eliminate the slight discomfort felt when turning the steering wheel, as well as the minute deviations in vehicle behaviour during straight-line acceleration - thereby increasing both agility and ride comfort.

Performance dampers can also contribute to improved audio performance, providing a similar effect to traditional sound-deadening materials.

This results in clearer sound, improved bass performance and reduced panel vibration.

RX FEATURES LEXUS' BOLD NEW DESIGN LANGUAGE

New-look RX is the third model in the Lexus line-up to feature the distinctive exterior styling of Lexus' new corporate identity.

The unique spindle grille, which appears on all-new GS and will be progressively introduced to other Lexus models, headlines the new design direction.

The spindle grille is a combination of a new trapezoid-shaped lower grille and the previous generation's trapezoid-shaped upper grille.

It provides a uniform shape while delivering dynamic and more aggressive styling.

The chrome-highlighted grille air intake surround is characterised by its 'arrowhead' design, while horizontal air intake fins replace the vertical fins of the previous model for a more contemporary appearance.

The bottom edge of the bumper is also now lower than the previous model and the lower grille integrates into the bumper for a sportier look.

The combination of the angular grille and pulled-back corners of the bumper add depth and sharpness while confirming RX as a fresh, new-generation Lexus.

An available Appearance package features a larger bumper from the F Sport range, which has a more pronounced version of the spindle grille.

It has a larger lower grille opening with honeycomb-pattern air intake mesh, and the vertical lines of the grille surround extend to the bottom edge of the lower grille alongside sharply angled bumper corners for a dynamic look.

Redesigned headlamps, with low beam lamps repositioned from an inner to an outer position, enhance the vehicle's wide, commanding presence.

LED daytime running lamps (DRLs) are also standard across the RX range, providing a high-tech look while also improving visibility and safety.

The DRLs are surrounded by the distinctive L-shaped arrowhead design.

A gloss finish badge, which has a blue background on the RX 450h model to denote its hybrid drivetrain, finishes off the fresh front design.

RX rear combination lamps have been redesigned to provide a higher quality look.

They have red lenses and incorporate signature Lexus design elements, including distinctive L-shaped arrowhead ornamentation and L-shaped LED tail lamps.

The number plate garnish plate also has a sharper, more angular design to complement the new rear combination lamp design.

RX CHEATS THE WIND TO PROVIDE REFINED CABIN FEEL

The new-look RX range has an advanced aerodynamic package for enhanced efficiency.

It also incorporates specific exterior aspects that keep wind noise to a minimum for added cabin refinement.

A specially-designed undertray and unique exterior elements help RX achieve a drag co-efficient figure of just 0.32.

The undertray is designed to control and promote clean, even airflow underneath the vehicle.

The revised front bumper has aerodynamic profiling to maintain clean airflow to the rear of the car, where the roof spoiler provides additional downforce for added stability.

The rear windscreen wiper mounting point is concealed in the spoiler along the upper edge of the rear window, contributing to reduced wind disturbance.

A windscreen mounting method that reduces the step between glass and exterior body panels further reduces wind noise.

In addition, the increased distance between the side mirrors and windows reduces wind buffeting.

The use of felt-coated inner wheel guard liners and strategically positioned vibration-damping coatings also help to reduce road noise.

All elements combine to prevent excessive noise from reaching the cabin, which results in a quieter, more luxurious interior feel.

NEW-LOOK RX FEATURES LATEST GENERATION LEXUS REMOTE TOUCH

New-look RX range comes with second-generation Lexus Remote Touch (LRT), which allows the navigation#, audio, climate control, connected phone or audio device to be controlled remotely via a computer mouse-like device positioned within the driver's 'operation zone'.

Adjustments can be made easily and comfortably without the driver having to significantly alter their driving position.

New generation LRT features two distinct improvements from the first generation system on superseded RX.

The moveable controller now runs across a flat pane rather than in arcs, and functions can be actuated by clicking the controller downwards like a computer mouse (replacing the previous generation controller's separate 'enter' buttons).

These key changes make operating second-generation LRT more intuitive and natural while allowing the driver to maintain their focus on the road ahead.

LRT also features adjustable pointer options and force-feedback (haptic control) to intuitively help find the right selection.

The LRT system guides the cursor to the nearest executable function.

The controller's other buttons allow the driver to instantly display the main menu and map, find the vehicle's current satellite-tracked position, and zoom in and out of the map#.

RX TAKES NAVIGATION TO NEXT LEVEL

Sophisticated navigation systems fitted to all RX models feature a new 'cockpit' map view, live traffic alerts, USB back-up and transfer, Hard Disk Drive (HDD) navigation and an improved user interface.

The cockpit view positions the camera above and behind the vehicle, providing the driver with a unique perspective on the surrounding area.

This is in addition to traditional aerial plan views.

The new systems also have access to Radio Data System-Traffic Management Channel (RDS-TMC), commonly known as SUNA GPS Traffic Updates*, enabling drivers to receive traffic updates live to their vehicle.

The driver can search for traffic conditions on specific roads to avoid accidents, traffic congestion, road works or road closures.

Various icons appear on screen when there are traffic or road condition warnings. These icons can be 'clicked' to display the traffic information.

Drivers are also able to select the traffic icon on screen (when highlighted) for spoken notices of traffic incidents on the current route.

Information supporting live traffic alerts is aggregated from probe vehicles and traffic information from the relevant state road authority, and is broadcast on a dedicated FM radio signal to special receivers in the navigation system.

A new-generation navigation system using HDD data (as opposed to traditional DVD-based navigation) ensures that map data is easily updated.

The new navigation system also features expanded use of the USB input.

Drivers can now save and record^ data/map points via the USB port, allowing for transfer of some memory points from vehicle to vehicle - particularly useful for fleet operators.

* Suna™ GPS Traffic Updates are only available in metropolitan Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney; it operates from information provided by Intelematics Australia and may not cover all road incidents and congestion. Please see www.sunatraffic.com.au for details.
