2015 Lexus NX 200t Press Kit

Lexus has expanded its recently launched NX Line with the addition of an important new first-for-Lexus turbocharged petrol engine.

The Lexus NX 200t features a new engine which has been nine years in development and introduces technical innovations such as its Lexus-designed proprietary turbocharger and manifold.

The extensive in-house development program was run to ensure the engine's power, efficiency, NVH and quality levels were suitable for the brand.

NX 200t's engine brings a higher level of performance to the NX range, and offers customers the choice of a different driving experience next to the highly efficient NX 300h hybrid models already on sale.

Putting out 175kW and 350Nm, the NX 200t's powerplant maximises the potential of the NX Line's stiff platform and all-wheel drive or two-wheel drive driveline to create the high-performance expression of what its creators have dubbed "urban sports gear".

NX 200t's six-speed automatic transmission combines with a number of the new engine's efficiency measures to provide excellent fuel economy of 7.7 litres/100km* on the combined cycle.

The powerplant in NX 200t brings world-first developments, including its cylinder head with integrated four-into-two exhaust manifold and twin-scroll turbocharger.

It also has Lexus firsts including the fuel-saving Stop & Start function, and most importantly - turbocharging technology for its petrol engines.

The new engine also has the latest Lexus fuel injection system.

NX 200t's technology package is housed in the visually dynamic Lexus L-Finesse exterior design language of the NX Line, within its well-appointed and highly specified interior.

Lexus Australia chief executive Sean Hanley said the NX 200t adds a new dimension to the NX Line while showcasing the technological development prowess of the marque.

"Lexus' most recent offerings - including the RC 350 and the RC F - are bolstering the brand's performance credentials alongside the quality we've always been known for," Mr Hanley said.

"The NX 200t now brings a genuine high performance option to our recently added NX small SUV Line.

"Its performance, along with the cutting-edge technology and innovation, really shows off the Lexus way of aiming for perfection right from the beginning."

* Figures are for 2WD model on the combined cycle. Fuel consumption and emissions vary depending on driving conditions / style, vehicle conditions and options / accessories.

NX is the newest addition to the Lexus family. It symbolises the new direction of our brand to provide design-driven, driver-rewarding vehicles underpinned by Lexus' advanced engineering and dynamic, efficient powertrains.

It belongs in a segment Lexus has not been involved in before: the premium crossover compact SUV market.

I was chief engineer of two previous Lexus vehicles - the 2006 IS sports sedan and 2010 RX luxury SUV.

The experience I gained from developing these models was beneficial to the creation of NX because the new vehicle combines the qualities of a low-profile sedan and a high-riding SUV.

I also spent considerable time benchmarking key market competitors, including Audi Q5, Range Rover Evoque, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class.

This process was crucial considering that NX is an all-new vehicle.

We employed body adhesive, laser screw welding and a high number of spot welds to create a rigid vehicle that delivers driving performance while also providing ample ride comfort for everyday use.

We also employed front differential preload, sprung weight damping control, new linear front differential preload on all-wheel drive models and a new linear solenoid-type Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system to give NX additional body control and flexibility in all conditions.

The same spirited driving performance can be enjoyed in both the front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive models.

All-wheel drive enhances the dynamic chassis of NX to deliver excellent traction in low-grip conditions and a confidence-inspiring drive on surfaces such as gravel and dirt.

The hybrid drivetrain provides an efficient yet sporty character to complement the chassis elements. It has been refined for NX, taking in improvements and enhancements for this new model.

My goal with the new turbocharged engine was to improve performance and fuel economy, with increased emphasis on driving performance compared with the hybrid. With the NX 200t, once the turbo kicks in the acceleration increases quadrilaterally.

We developed this engine in-house and subjected it to a world-wide test regime, beginning with 10,000 hours of bench tests. We then tested at altitudes above 3,000 metres and at ambient temperatures in excess of 50 degrees celsius. More than 40 sensors were placed on the engine instead of the usual 10.

The acceleration curve prioritised torque delivery at low speeds, so we adopted a water-cooled intercooler to optimise acceleration from take-off and up to 100km/h.

I am personally satisfied that the production styling package does not differ markedly from the very aggressive LF-NX concept that we showed in 2013.

NX is the latest expression of the Lexus L-Finesse design language: retaining sharp lines, a wide, powerful stance and a sporting feel that gives it considerable on-road presence.

We aimed to make a bold impression and ensure NX was noticed, whether it was parked on a suburban street or driving on the freeway.

We also created a high quality interior to reflect the cutting lines of the exterior and introduced innovations such as a new Lexus Remote Touch interface, which has a touch-pad like that of a smartphone for excellent functionality.

We also achieved superior interior accommodation and packaging, with class-leading front/rear couple distance, competitor-topping luggage centre length and class-leading luggage space.

Leading passive and active safety standards were engineered into NX to provide additional peace of mind, and NX will be the first in its class to feature all speed active cruise control.

I am confident that with all these combined elements we have created a new generation vehicle that looks, drives, feels and is more efficient than anything else on the market.

The new Lexus NX 200t has an innovative turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine that can operate on both the fuel-saving Atkinson cycle and the conventional Otto cycle.

The late intake valve closing of the Atkinson cycle reduces pumping losses and boosts fuel economy.

The new Lexus 8AR-FTS engine is crammed with new technology and has been the subject of a conference paper to the Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan (JSAE).

Special attention was paid to minimising turbo 'lag', including the use of a twin-scroll turbocharger and mounting the intercooler to the engine to minimise the intake volume downstream of the turbocharger to optimise response.

Breakthrough features include: the world's first cylinder head with integrated four-into-two exhaust manifold and twin-scroll turbocharger; the latest iteration of the Lexus intelligent variable valve timing system, known as VVT-iW ('W' for wide); and first use of the Lexus Stop & Start engine technology.

The wider range of inlet timing variation in the VVT-iW system means the new NX 200t engine can switch instantly from the Otto cycle to the high-expansion ratio, high-efficiency Atkinson cycle according to vehicle operating conditions.

Lexus has previously used the Atkinson combustion cycle exclusively in hybrid-model petrol engines.

The new 8AR-FTS engine also has the latest Lexus fuel injection system, known as ESTEC D-4ST (Economy with Superior Thermal Efficient Combustion) and an air-to-liquid intercooler.

The D-4ST system splits injection between high-pressure direct injection and low-pressure port injection according to driving conditions, providing optimum combustion at all times.

The new Euro 5-compliant turbocharged engine delivers 175kW of power from 4800-5600rpm and 350Nm of torque from 1650-4000rpm.

It has official ADR 82/01 combined cycle fuel economy of 7.7 litres/100km with 2WD and 7.9 litres/100km with Dynamic Torque Control AWD#. The respective CO2 emission levels are 178g/km for 2WD and 184g/km for AWD#.

Integrated systems control
Lexus has combined the cylinder head, exhaust manifold and intercooler with variable waste-gate control to optimise low-speed torque and fuel economy, as well as meeting strict emission requirements.

Active waste-gate control minimises pumping losses by reducing back pressure during low engine load.

The VVT-iW system optimises torque throughout the engine revolution range and allows the engine to start in the Otto cycle and run in the more fuel efficient Atkinson cycle.

The VVT-iW system has a mid-position lock to enable Atkinson cycle to be maintained without sacrificing starting performance in cold weather and also to deliver Wide Open Throttle performance.

Advanced features
The NX 200t engine is cast with low nickel content, heat-resistant steel.

Cooling oil jets under the pistons improve durability and enhance warm-up performance.

Twin balance shafts with resin gears minimise engine vibration to improve cabin comfort - a marked improvement in four-cylinder engine technology.

Further measures to reduce noise, vibration and harshness 'at the source' include an electric air bypass valve and a resonator in the intake system, to reduce the characteristic turbo noise when the throttle is closed (referred to as the 'turbo sigh').

Weights and measures
The new Lexus turbo engine weighs just 160kg and was bench-tested for more than 10,000 hours before extensive on-road testing began, covering more than one million kilometres.

The Lexus turbo spins to 180,000rpm.

Lexus developed a new 0-20W viscosity lubricating oil without calcium content to remove the chance of engine knock at low engine revolutions.

# Fuel consumption and emissions vary depending on driving conditions / style, vehicle conditions and options / accessories.

The Lexus 2.0-litre turbocharged dual-injection petrol engine was developed in-house for a combination of top-level fuel economy and exhilarating performance.

In a world first the cylinder head, four-into-two exhaust manifold and twin-scroll turbocharger have been integrated.

This allows for a high compression ratio (for a turbo petrol engine) of 10.0:1, providing optimum low-speed torque, throttle response and fuel economy.

The four-into-two manifold system pairs cylinders according to their expansion or compression strokes and, when combined with the turbocharger design, reduces pumping losses.

The dual-pipe exhaust design allows for optimum gas flow for superior performance.

The Lexus 8AR-FTS engine also has an air-to-liquid intercooler mounted directly to the engine to help minimise turbo lag.

The new NX 200t turbo is the first Lexus with the Stop & Start engine system.

The breakthrough Stop & Start system for the Lexus turbocharged petrol engine delays engine start-up until the accelerator pedal is activated, to maximise fuel savings.

Many other start and stop systems restart the engine when the brake pedal is released.

Intensive development work with the Lexus turbo 2AR-FTS engine's direct-injection technology allows a firing stroke to commence in less than half a crankshaft revolution, providing quicker response.

The turbo engine's bespoke D-4S system can inject fuel into the one cylinder while that cylinder is stopped on its compression stroke, allowing ignition and combustion to occur simultaneously to quickly re-start the engine.

For added safety and convenience, Lexus Stop & Start operates simultaneously with the Brake Hold function and the all-speed active cruise control system fitted to Sports Luxury models and F Sport Enhancement Pack 2.

Lexus NX 200t's engine stops automatically while the vehicle is stationary, such as at traffic lights and in heavy traffic.

The engine re-starts when the accelerator pedal is depressed and the Brake Hold function is automatically cancelled.

A high-performance battery and high-precision battery sensor optimise power supply performance, enabling the engine to be stopped for longer periods.

If the Active Cruise Control is in use#, the engine stops when the vehicle stops (even if the brake pedal is not activated) and re-starts when the preceding vehicle starts off.

# ACC is a driver assist technology and should not be used as a substitute for safe driving practices. Driver should continue to monitor the road.

Lexus NX 200t has a new sequential-shift six-speed automatic transmission and the choice of two drivelines - two-wheel drive or a sophisticated electronically controlled proactive all-wheel drive system.

Sequential shifting can be initiated via the gear lever or paddle shifters on the steering wheel.

Both drivelines include the Lexus-first feature of a pre-loaded front differential.

The new U661 transaxle makes NX 200t the first Lexus compatible with the Stop & Start engine system.

A compact, lightweight, ultra-low-noise electrically driven oil pump supplies pressure to the start-off clutch, so the transmission is ready to operate before the engine starts.

The oil-pump was specially engineered for low noise, as it continues to operate when the engine is stopped.

The U661 transaxle networks with the turbocharged engine to achieve a balance of boost pressure, for performance and fuel economy.

Features of the new transaxle include a specialised torque converter to complement the turbo engine, low-loss friction materials, a low-loss thrust bearing and low-loss fluid-pressure control system.

The NX 200t's new transaxle is an evolution of the U660 transmission proven in other Lexus models.

It is a lightweight, compact unit with an impressive array of electronic-control features designed to provide smooth shifting and acceleration, optimum fuel economy and response, and sporting driving performance.

Fuel-saving features include flexible torque-converter lock-up control from second to sixth gear.

In additional to sequential shifting in M Mode, the steering wheel paddle shifters can also be used in D (automatic) mode, to initiate downshifts.

This feature, known as 'temporary sequential mode', helps the driver set up for a corner or simply slow the vehicle in a low-speed zone.

Sport AI shift control
Lexus Sport AI (artificial intelligence) shift control is a transmission algorithm designed to manage the shift regime according to road conditions and driver intention, thereby optimising the characteristics of the turbo engine.

It includes Driver-intention Control, Sudden Braking Downshift Control and G-AI Shift Control.

Driver-intention Control monitors accelerator usage and vehicle condition to provide gear shift patterns that suit sporty driving.

G-AI Shift Control uses G-sensor information to help set up for a corner and ensure optimum response when re-acceleration occurs.

It combines the NX 200t features of Drive Mode Select (DMS) and the new G-sensor when the transmission is in D (automatic) mode.

The system selects the most suitable gear for sporting driving by monitoring the status of the vehicle's G sensor, with shifting selection biased towards the lower gears to draw out the full potential of the turbocharged engine.

When entering a corner in the D range with SPORT mode selected, the vehicle condition is determined using information gathered from the G-sensor and driver operations, and the transmission downshifts to the optimum gear. While cornering, the gear is held to enable powerful acceleration at the corner exit.

Powertrain Cooperative Control
Powertrain Cooperative Control uses information based on driver operations, vehicle condition and driving environment to match engine and transmission settings and optimise driveability.

In DMS SPORT mode, the targeted drive force and gear range are set according to accelerator pedal angle to provide a sportier driving experience and acceleration from the turbo engine.

Pre-loaded differential
The new NX 200t has Lexus' first pre-loaded front differential, to ensure straight-line stability and acceleration performance when the differential is under light loads or there is a low rotational speed difference between the left and right wheels.

It provides the benefits of a limited-slip differential at low speeds and on slippery surfaces.

Starting and turning is easier on normal and slippery roads. The steering is stable in straight-line driving at constant motorway speeds and it has greater straight-line stability on dirt or rough-terrain roads.

The pre-loaded differential uses a plate spring between the side gear and side-gear washer to add pre-load and friction at the sliding parts, providing differential limiting torque between the front wheels.

It operates as an open differential at higher loads.

The three Lexus NX 200t all-wheel drive models have the added sophistication of Lexus' Dynamic Torque Control AWD, to further enhance vehicle handling stability and optimise fuel economy.

Dynamic Torque Control AWD uses an electronically controlled coupling on the rear differential housing to finely control the front/rear torque split between 100:0 and 50:50.

The system controls the torque split according to driver intention, vehicle condition and available traction - using information on vehicle speed, engine revolutions, throttle opening angle, shift position, steering angle and brake application, and from two G sensors and a yaw-rate sensor.

The torque split in NX 200t AWD is situation-specific.

Torque distribution to the rear wheels is controlled under normal straight-line driving conditions to save fuel. It is also controlled when starting off and while turning sharply to avoid 'tight-corner braking'.

Special features of the system include pre-torque control (based on driver input) and yaw-rate feedback control. Both are designed to enhance driving pleasure, handling stability and cornering.

The moment the driver operates the steering wheel, pre-torque control sets the front/rear torque distribution to 90:10 to provide excellent steering control when cornering.

It allows the driver to better track the intended driving line and increases driveability on slippery as well as normal road surfaces.

Yaw-rate feedback control operates in the second half of the corner and varies the front/rear torque split according to vehicle yaw. It can vary the front/rear torque split up to a maximum 50:50, based on steering angle, yaw rate and other inputs.

When braking, the AWD function is cancelled to optimise brake effectiveness and the operation of the ABS and VSC systems.

The driver can maximise AWD performance on dirt, sand and slippery/snowy roads simply by pushing the AWD LOCK button.

Lexus NX 200t is built on a stiff, solid foundation that incorporates years of chassis expertise and provides dynamic driving characteristics.

The chassis allows for superior driving dynamics.

The chassis was tuned by hand to match the performance of the new turbocharged four-cylinder engine, with numerous body bracings added and removed to test their impact on handling. A total of 11 areas were scrutinised to ensure the ideal mix of rigidity and handling.

The significant improvement in torsional rigidity has been achieved through the extensive use of hot-stamped high tensile strength sheet steel (up to 980MPa) combined with aluminium to create a light and highly rigid body.

Advances pioneered in Lexus LS and IS (particularly body adhesive, laser screw welding and additional spot welds) have been used to strengthen panel joints.

Body bonding was applied to the firewall, front members, wheel surrounds front and rear, door apertures and the rear tailgate surround.

Laser screw welding around the door openings is supplemented by new body adhesive in the door openings, rear-wheel housing and rear floor.

Reinforcement around suspension members creates a strong platform and the number three cross-member is reinforced to support the drivetrain.

A high rigidity urethane sealant has been used for the windshield glass, effectively making the glass a load-bearing member while increasing resistance to body flex.

Lexus has further developed its Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) suspension system to enhance the dynamic appeal of NX 200t.

AVS controls the damping force of the shock absorbers in response to driving and road conditions, to provide handling stability and a comfortable ride in a range of conditions.

In the NX 200t, AVS provides 30 levels of adjustment to suit different conditions.

The operation of the AVS system depends on the Drive Mode Select setting, with a higher level of control for dynamic handling performance in Sport+ mode.

The AVS system is made up of the following damping force controls:

Vehicle speed sensing control
Controlling damping force in accordance with vehicle speed helps achieve both ride comfort at low speed and handling stability at high speed.

Roll attitude control
Based on signal input from steering, yaw rate and linear G sensors, the system controls damping forces on all four wheels to maintain optimum vehicle attitude during cornering.

Anti-dive control
The system predicts that the vehicle will pitch forward due to brake operation based on the pressure in the brake master cylinder, and maintains a higher damping force. This moderates the speed at which the vehicle pitches forward, helping ensure ride comfort and handling stability.

Anti-squat control
This feature predicts a squat condition due to acceleration, based on output torque signals from the engine control computer or the HV control computer, and increases damping force. This reduces the amount of vehicle attitude change, helping ensure excellent ride comfort and handling stability.

Rebound control
Based on signals from a vertical G sensor, oscillations are detected in the directions of heave, roll and pitch due to inputs from the road surface. By controlling damping force on all four wheels, rebound is naturally smoothed down, ensuring excellent ride comfort.

Ruggedness-sensing control
Low damping force is maintained when rough vibration is sensed by the vertical G sensor output while driving over irregular road surfaces. This lessens the transmission of vibrations to the cabin to provide a more comfortable ride.

Lexus NX 200t features the Drive Mode Select (DMS) system that allows the driver to tailor vehicle systems to their specific requirements with the turn of a dial.

DMS uses ambient illumination in the instrument display to indicate which mode is currently selected.

The NX 200t Luxury model has a three-step DMS system with ECO, NORMAL and SPORT modes.

ECO mode optimises vehicle output parameters for enhanced efficiency*. Engine output and accelerator opening angles are controlled and air conditioning airflow volume is suppressed.

It remains engaged even when the engine is started again after being switched off.

NORMAL mode delivers a balance between dynamic performance and fuel economy for everyday driving.

SPORT mode adjusts the electronic power steering, engine and transmission to provide enhanced response and more aggressive acceleration.

F Sport and Sports Luxury models feature an additional mode, SPORT+, thanks to the standard fitment of Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS).

SPORT+ draws out the full potential of AVS while integrating the functions of SPORT mode to provide a more focused and dynamic driving experience.

* Fuel consumption varies depending on driving conditions / style, vehicle conditions and options / accessories.

Clever packaging and an innovative rear suspension design give Lexus NX 200t class-leading space advantages within its compact, sporty exterior.

The front-to-rear couple distance (the front seat hip point to the rear hip point) is a class-leading 962mm, providing superior rear occupant comfort and accommodation.

The hip point for the front seats is the lowest in the segment. Sports Luxury models have the option of a Lexus and segment-first power-operated rear seat that folds down in less than 10 seconds.

Rear occupant comfort has also been boosted by a reduction in the gap between the headliner and roof panel to provide additional headroom to complement the extra space for occupants' legs.

It offers 53.5mm of head clearance above the seat and 74.8mm side head clearance.

The driver and front-seat passenger also benefit from generous headroom, with 57.3mm of front head clearance and 54mm of side head clearance.

The rear cargo area is a segment-leading 948mm long with the rear seats upright.

The rear trim shapes were designed to maximise cargo space.

Maximum luggage area width is 1347mm, meaning up to four 9.5-inch golf bags can be stored sideways.

There is 500 litres of luggage space behind the rear seat and 1545 litres with the rear-seat folded, as well as space under the luggage board in four storage boxes.

Storage locations also include a console box with mid tray, a utility box, sunglasses storage bin and door pockets with bottle holders. The centre cup holders accept large US-sized cups.

Lexus NX 200t has a premium active safety package that includes all-coil independent suspension, large brake package, proactive all-wheel drive system#, new-generation adaptive variable suspension (on selected models), and the availability of Lane Departure Warning+ (LDW+), automatic high beam and tyre pressure warning system.

F Sport and Sports Luxury models also have the Lexus panoramic view monitor and blind spot monitor (BSM) with rear cross traffic alert (RCTA).

Lexus NX 200t also has daytime running lamps, reversing camera and front fog lamps, as well as comprehensive electronic safety features including electronically controlled braking, Emergency Brake Signal, vehicle stability control (VSC), traction control (TRC), ABS anti-skid brakes with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), and Hill-start Assist Control.

The new turbo model's stability control system is Lexus VSC+ with electric-power assisted steering input, and is complemented by a suite of driver assistance features (TRC, ABS brakes and EBD).

Lexus Dynamic Torque Control AWD helps maximise traction and cornering stability on all-wheel drive models.

LDW+ warns the driver with a buzzer and on the Multi-Information Display if the system senses the vehicle is about to cross lane markings without using the turn signals, and assists with steering to avoid lane departure.

It can support the driver on wet days and on roads where the lane is marked on one side only.

Automatic high beam* uses the same windscreen-mounted camera as LDW+ to detect the lack of light from surrounding street lamps or from other vehicles at night. The system will automatically switch the headlamps to high beam if it deems it necessary.

The system also detects when there are vehicles ahead travelling in either direction and will switch to low beam to prevent dazzling other road users. It will resume high beam when there are no vehicles ahead.

All NX 200t models have a direct-type tyre-pressure warning system.

It illuminates a tyre-warning lamp on the dashboard if the pressure in any tyre falls to a hazardous level.

The active-safety features of the Lexus Pre-Collision Safety System include Pre-Collision Brake Assist and Pre-Collision Brake (available on selected models).

# AWD models only.

New Lexus NX 200t has eight SRS airbags and the availability of the Lexus Pre-Collision Safety System (PCS)* on selected models.

It also has a comprehensive impact-absorbing body structure, Whiplash Injury Lessening front seats, head-impact protection interior cabin features and ISOFix child restraint anchorage points.

Lexus PCS includes a millimetre-wavelength radar sensor in the radiator grille to detect vehicles or other obstacles. The radar sensor also provides distance measurement for the all-speed adaptive cruise control.

Lexus PCS has a multi-layer strategy. It uses the radar sensor to detect a possible collision between the vehicle and an obstacle ahead, such as another vehicle.

Should the system anticipate a collision, its first stage response is a buzzer and a light to warn the driver. A warning-timing selection feature, controlled by the PCS switch, provides three warning levels - far, mid and near.

The second stage is to activate the brake system to reduce any potential impact.

Pre-Collision Brake Assist (PCBA) and Pre-Collision Brake (PCB) help avoid the collision and/or reduce the impact by significantly decelerating the vehicle.

PCBA increases braking effort when the driver applies the brakes. If the PCS system determines a collision is unavoidable it will activate to reduce vehicle speed through PCB, even if the driver doesn't use the brake pedal.

The PCS in Lexus NX 200t has the latest version of PCBA and PCB, where the system helps to decelerate the vehicle from a maximum speed of 60km/h by assisting the driver in braking and a reduction from a maximum of 30km/h in case the driver cannot control the brake appropriately.

The Lexus NX frontal and side collision protection measures include the use of high-tensile-strength steel sheet up to 980Mpa in key areas such as the centre-pillar hinge reinforcement, rocker outer reinforcement and roof cross-member.

In a side-on crash, impact load is transmitted to the floor through a structure of cross-members built into the rocker, beneath the centre pillar.

Tailored blank sheets of high-tensile steel are laser-welded in advance for the centre-pillar outer reinforcement, providing high levels of strength while meeting strict weight targets.

A bulkhead and number two cross-member reinforcement are built into the rocker and on the underbody beneath the centre pillar, creating a structure that effectively transmits load from a side impact to the floor. Hot-stamp material has been specified for the rail outer to ensure excellent strength.

The door post (centre pillar part) of the new-structure door frame has a gradually changing cross-section to enhance the strength of the centre-pillar and ensure optimum strength against roof crush and side impacts. The cross-section has been enlarged across the belt line and the door opening has been moved inwards.

A new rear-impact structure disperses offset collision energy to the main chassis members on both sides of the vehicle.

Pedestrian protection includes an energy-absorbing structure for the bonnet and the fender-mounting bracket, as well as an impact-absorbing structure for the cowl.

Energy-absorbing material has been adopted in front of the bumper reinforcement and under the radiator support to protect the legs of pedestrians in the event of a collision.

Inside, Lexus NX 200t has energy-absorbing structures in the pillars and roof head lining. There are impact-absorbing pads in the front and rear door trim, adjacent to the occupant's lumbar region, to reduce side impact injury.

Lexus Whiplash Injury Lessening front seats are fitted to all NX 200t models.

Eight airbags
All NX 200t models have eight SRS airbags, including a dual-stage driver's airbag and dual-stage and dual-chamber front-passenger airbag.

There is also a driver knee and passenger cushion airbag, twin-chamber front-seat side airbags and full-length side curtain-shield airbags.

The airbags network with the Lexus PCS available on NX 200t F Sport (as part of enhancement pack 2) and Sports Luxury.

The twin-chamber front-passenger's airbag helps restrain the passenger's shoulders.

The twin-chamber side airbags help reduce the load on the chest and pelvis in a side-impact collision.

The Lexus NX 200t side curtain-shield airbag has been designed to inflate from the centre pillar, with gas flowing forward and aft, to reduce the inflation time and better protect the occupant's head.

The driver's knee airbag has been designed with a depression to reduce any potential load on the knee joint.

* PCS is a driver assist technology and should not be used as a substitute for safe driving practices. Driver should continue to monitor the road.

The Lexus NX 200t F Sport is distinguished by major styling and dynamic differences, with an even bolder grille adding to the already aggressive face of the NX.

NX 200t F Sport has its own wheel and tyre package, a clearly differentiated cabin, unique figure-hugging sports seats, and an adaptive variable suspension system that allows for a greater range of dynamic performance.

F Sport grille and exterior
An L-mesh grille on Lexus performance models integrates with a metallic-coated lower bumper moulding to set the F Sport apart.

The large spindle aperture is graded from bottom to top to express the outline of the distinctive F-Sport motif.

The front face of NX 200t F Sport is accentuated by a black coating on the two door-mounted side mirrors to provide a unique appearance.

F Sport models feature an exclusive dual five spoke wheel and lower profile 235/55R18 tyre combination with an exclusive dark metallic finish.

The exterior presentation is capped by the signature F Sport emblem on the front quarter panel beneath the A-pillar.

Exclusive colour and interior
The meter, steering wheel, gear shift, sport seats, pedals, unique ornamentation/stitching on the passenger centre console and interior colour of Dark Rose are all exclusive to F Sport.

Injection-moulded and quilted seats that hug the occupant's body are exclusive in F Sport colours.

Instruments are specially graded to enable sports drivers to better pick their shift points.

The tachometer redline is even more clearly marked. A white outer band on the meter with inverted colours has been adopted from Lexus LFA and IS F Sports vehicles.

Non-slip aluminium pedals and a driver's foot brace provide practical assistance to sports driving. The premium steering wheel covering is perforated to provide even greater feel during performance driving.

The steering wheel carries the F Sport emblem in its lower quadrant. The brushed metallic gear shift lever and the scuff plate ornamentation beneath the door are exclusive to F Sport.

Even sharper handling
Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) is fitted as standard to NX 200t F Sport.

AVS results in more precise steering feel and response, increasing the communication with the driver and providing improved steering feedback.

The switchable damping system is improved on previous generations. In NX F Sport damping force has been increased from its previous nine levels to 30. Suspension response time has increased four times from 80 milliseconds to 20.

AVS can be switched between NORMAL and SPORT S+ mode to provide a choice between optimum ride comfort and prioritising handling stability.

Boost meter and G-sensor
Lexus' first ever turbocharged vehicle features a boost meter in its full-colour Multi Information Display (MID).

The boost meter has a band that changes colour in the high boost range, to clearly display the activity of the turbocharger.

Additionally, oil temperature and pressure read outs are displayed at the bottom of the boost meter.

NX F Sport is also equipped with a G-Monitor, which includes a G-ball that moves in accordance with the vehicle's lateral and longitudinal forces.

The MID displays the peak force in each direction while display bars indicate the steering angle, throttle opening angle and hydra
