RIVALS SMARTING AFTER RALLY OF QUEENSLAND

Queensland rally driver Ryan Smart has taken his Toyota Corolla to an impressive victory in the International Rally of Queensland with a fast, clean drive on the final day.

Heading into the final stage Ryan and co-driver John Allen were the last of three cars separated by only two seconds.

By the end of the stage an amazing drive had seen Ryan pull back 15.4 sec to win the heat, and the round.

"I was doing things out there today that you really shouldn't be able to do in a car. I honestly was thinking at times, 'If we go off here we're in big trouble!' " Ryan said.

"We had some issues on Saturday, with driveshaft problems and an excursion off the road, but we managed to have a clean day on Sunday and win eight of the nine stages - and that was what gave us the win."

This is the second win on the trot for the team, having won the QUIT Forest Rally WA in April.

Smart's Toyota Corolla is at a disadvantage against the more powerful, unrestricted ARC cars, but it's a challenge that Ryan is enjoying.

"The level of competition this year is intense, especially against the unrestricted cars.

"We're still running a 34mm restrictor in our car, so we're down on power compared to those guys; we just attack every corner as fast as we can and it's rewarding us. Hopefully we can do the same thing in South Australia."
